Library Temporarily Relocating for renovation

As of May 1, 2023 the Wellman Scofield Public Library will be relocating to a temporary location while our current building is renovated. We will be located at the Driscoll Building in downtown Wellman from May until approximately November of 2023.
During this time, the majority of our collection will be available for check out. The reference section, adult audiobooks and select adult biographies will be in storage to help save on space. We will have 2 laptops available for limited patron use in the library as well as a printer/copier. The children’s computers will not be available during this time.
Our temporary location will be open normal hours (M-Th 10am – 6pm, Fri 10am – 4pm, & Sat 10am-1pm). The after hours drop box will still be located at our 4th street building. We ask that you hold on to your borrowed books during the week in which we will be moving the library (5/1-5/6). We will open back up in our downtown location on Tuesday, May 9th.
We will still be holding a Summer Reading Program during the summer of 2023 but all of our programs & activites will take place at either North Park or the Parkside Activities Center.
Our contact information will remain the same with our normal phone number and email address for any questions you might have! Thank you for your patience during this time of transition! We are so excited for what the future holds for the library!
Wellman SCofield Public Library Awarded Grant
November 16, 2022 was very momentous for our library. We cannot possibly put into words how thankful we are for the Washington County Riverboat Foundation. They chose to award us full funding for our grant to expand the library. We are grateful beyond measure! Also, a big thank you to the City of Wellman for their support with this project. We cannot wait to get started!!
The library will be expanding into the space on the East end of our building, formerly the Senior Dining Center. This addition will nearly double our current square footage and give us space for some much-needed improvements! We will be adding not only additional shelf space, but a programming room, study room, additional bathrooms, expanding our children’s area, and more!
We are so thankful for all of the support we have received from our community!
When you support the Wellman-Scofield Public Library, you help to sustain and grow your local library as a place that is accessible and welcoming to all, where individuals and groups can learn and grow, make connections, find inspiration and explore possibilities.

So what is this expansion all about?
This expansion projects is:
- Doubling our current space

New Library Layout Preview
Here is a look at the plans for our library expansion. You may have seen different plans previously. We have worked with our architect to re-evaluate the remodeling plans, updating them to better use the existing structure while making an even better space for the community.

Current Location
Our current location is roughly 2,500 square feet with only one single-stall restroom and no room for storage or programming. While this location has served our library for many years, we have outgrown its wall and are excite to expand into the vacant space to the east that formerly housed the Senior Center and Alternative Learning Center.

Expanded Library
Our expansion is set to double our current space, providing us with not only much needed additional shelving for our growing library, but also an amazing programming room, two two-stall bathrooms, storage, a librarian work room, and greater accessibility to our library. While this rough layout will change slightly as our expansion moves forward, it is so exciting to see this project coming to fruition. Again, we cannot thank the Washington County Riverboat Foundation and all of our donors for their support in making this a reality for our community!!

A peek at our fundraising events
Dino Adventure Fun!
With over 950 people in attendance, our Dino Adventure was a blast! We had games, a fossil dig, a maze, a virtual reality room, big dinosaurs, and more for everyone to enjoy. A huge thank you to everyone who came out to make this event a success, especially our volunteers who made this possible. We were able to raise $1500 towards our library expansion.
TRIVIA NIGHT SUCCESS
We had a fantastic turnout for our first big fundraiser! We had almost 20 trivia teams attend the event and our silent auction was also a huge success. We are happy to report that we raised almost $3,500! We are so thankful to our community for supporting this event!
