It is an exciting time here at the Wellman-Scofield Public Library! We have received the official okay from the city of Wellman to take over the space on the East end of our building, formerly the Senior Dining Center. This addition will nearly double our current square footage and give us space for some much-needed improvements! We have hired Martin-Gardner Architecture and they have come up with some great plans for the renovation. We are currently in the fundraising stage and hope to begin construction in the Fall of 2019.
This page will be a space for announcements and updates as the renovation progresses. Please check back occasionally to see what is happening!

Wellman library seeks grant for expansion
Mar 28, 2019
The Wellman-Scofield Public Library is looking to the Washington County Riverboat Foundation (WCRF) for expansion and renovation funds.
Last week, the Wellman City Council gave the go-ahead for the library, in conjunction with the city, to apply for a $375,000 grant from the WCRF.
“I hope they can see the need,” library Director Carol Wilkins said at the March 18 council meeting. “Our programs really bring a lot of people in.”
Since last fall, the library has been raising money for its proposed expansion and renovation project, which is estimated to cost approximately $500,000.
The expansion would create a large program area, as well as increasing shelf space for books and other materials.
Wilkins said that the library currently has $127,000 on hand for the project.
City Administrator Kelly Litwiller said that the funds on hand would go toward a $150,000 match that the city and library would need if the WCRF grant is approved. The city would cover the remainder of the matching funds.
Wilkins said that the library will continue its fundraising efforts.
“We still have fundraisers going on,” she said. “If I have more money, I can apply for more grants.”
The WCRF will announce the grant awards in May.
