Getting started with streaming video from your library
If your digital library offers streaming videos, you can borrow and watch free shows, movies, and more whenever you have an internet connection. Depending on what device you’re using, videos will play either in the OverDrive app (Android and iOS) or right in your web browser.
How to watch streaming videos
To get started, borrow a streaming video from your library’s digital collection. Then, go to your Checkouts page (under your Account), and:
- If you’re using a web browser (like Chrome or Safari) or OverDrive for Windows 8/10, click or tap Play to start watching in a new tab.
- If you’re using OverDrive for Android or iOS, tap Add to app to add the video to your app Bookshelf. You’ll need to go to your app Bookshelf to start watching the video.
You’ll need an internet connection when watching a streaming video (even after you add it to the OverDrive app). Streaming videos can consume a lot of data, so we recommend streaming over a Wi-Fi connection.
What devices and browsers work best
Streaming videos work on computers and Windows 8 and 10 devices as long as you have:
- Adobe Flash Player
- An up-to-date web browser, like Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer 10 or newer, or Safari.
On Android or iOS devices, you’ll need:
- The OverDrive app, v3.1 or newer
- Android 4.4 or higher
- iOS 9 or higher
Note: You may not be able to play all streaming videos (like those from Starz) on Fire tablets, even using the OverDrive app.
